What does my number mean?
It's what you'd likely get back (green) or still owe (orange) for the tax year you picked. We take what contractors paid you, knock off your expenses, work out the tax and National Insurance on what's left, then compare that with the CIS that was taken off.
- Green = you've had more taken than you owe. That's your refund.
- Orange = not enough was taken. That's what you'd still have to pay.
How close is it?
It's an estimate. It only knows the figures you put in. It doesn't see your HMRC record, student loan, other income you left out, or anything for limited companies. HMRC works out the real figure from your tax return.
Your figures stay on your phone. Nothing is sent or saved.
How do I get the money?
A CIS refund is only paid once you file a Self Assessment tax return for that year. For 2025-26 the online deadline is 31 January 2027. You can file it yourself on GOV.UK, or use an accountant.
Can S+ Money do it for me?
Not yet. We open in early 2027, once S+ Money is registered to file returns for people. If you'd like us to do it then, get on the list and we'll message you. It's free to join and there's nothing to pay today.
What happens after I join the list?
- We keep your name, mobile and (if you give them) email, payroll number and estimate.
- We message you when we open. Nothing happens before then.
- You'll see the price in pounds before you agree to anything.
- Changed your mind? Email us and we'll delete your details. More in the sign-up privacy notice.
Tips for a better estimate
- Use your CIS statements (your contractors send one every month) for what you were paid and what was taken off.
- Add your expenses: tools, van or mileage, phone, workwear, parking. They usually make the refund bigger.
- Had a PAYE job or pension too? Open that section (step 3) and add it, or the estimate will be too high.
